Episode 6: The Pagan Roots of St. Valentine's Day

Powered by Podbean.comMost Christian holidays have their roots in pagan celebrations.  St. Valentine's Day is no different.  Romans, on the fourteenth and fifthteenth of February celebrated Lupercalia, a celebration of marriage and fertility.  They gave offerings and thanks to the appropriate deities, and requested their help in promoting contented marriages and fertility in their society. In 489, an emperor declared the fourteenth a holy day in hopes of taking over the pagan rituals.  He incorporated activities that were church-based and faith oriented. It wasn't until the Renaissance, however, that Valentine's Day customs became more love-based rather than faith based. To incorporate this celebration into your everyday life, most modern Valentine's Day customs are appropriate - it's about being with and being thankful for those that you love.Blessed be!To download this episode in mp3 format, right click the link below and click "save target as:"Download this episode (right click and save)  This episode contains music by Eimear Quinn called The Voice which can be purchased on Amazon for only $0.99!

In this episode we discuss Lithomancy - a perfect practice for Candlemas.  In particular, we talk about how to make and use "talking stones" as described by Callia Underhill in A Witch's Book of Divination.Powered by Podbean.comThe thirteen stones and what they represent:1. Querent stone: represents seeker2. Sun stone: represents success3. Moon stone: can represent changes, also 28 days4. Mercury stone: travel over small distances5. Venus stone: represents love and friendship6. Mars stone: angry words/arguments7. Jupiter stone: fortunate stone: happiness and luck8. Saturn stone: unfortunate - represents endings, parting and/or seperation9. Life stone: represents health - mental, emotional, or physical10. News stone: news coming11. Magick stone: If the seeker asks about magick, it answers whether he should or should not use it.  If the seeker did not ask this, then it suggests maybe he should consider using magick.12. Home Stone: home environment13. Other Stone: represents how others or their opinions may factor inCreate a circle.  Place querent stone in middle.  Seeker focuses on simple question and casts other 12 stones.  Remove all stones that landed outside of circle.  Remove stones that landed face down.  Read and divine using meanings above.       To download this podcast in mp3 format, right click the link below and choose "save target as:"Download this episode (right click and save)Remember to cleanse and consecrate your stones before use.  Callia Underhill also recommends carrying them on your person for a week to two so that they absorb some of your energy.  I like this idea.  Especially after taking the time to create them and magickally cleansing/consecrating them, they stones are more personal.          Book reviews (from below): Solitary Witch : a wonderful compendium of knowledge.  This is my go-to book.  If I need to look something up, I usually start with this book.A Modern Witch's Spellbook:  This is NOT a book on Wicca.  It is a book on witchcraft, and though the author can be a bit humorous at times, I would NOT recommend it.  She focuses on a lot of magick that is impractical, un-Wiccan, and consequently, without a doubt contrary to the Wiccan Rede.<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wicca-Solitary-Practitioner-Authors-Shadows/dp/0875421180?ie=UTF8&tag=wiccae-20

*UPDATE* For those of you who have had trouble hearing this episode: the volume has now been fixed:Powered by Podbean.comIn this episode, we discuss what Candlemas is as well as how and why it is celebrated.Candlemas (also referred to as Imbolc, Imbolg, Brigantia, Candelaria, Disting, Lupercus or Strega) is a sabbat in the Wiccan tradition.  This sabbat marks the midpoint between Yule and Ostara.  It is a crossroads.  For these reasons, many practicioners believe that Brigid is a particularly appropriate deity to work with for this celebration. We discuss some wonderful ideas for rituals that can be incorporated on this sabbat, including divination, ritual cleaning and tending to your desires magickally by nurturing seedlings.  (Please listen to the podcast for more details). This podcast includes beautiful music by Lisa Thiel, on her albums Circle of Seasons and Journey to the Goddess.  I would reccomend purchasing the CDs for your ritual workings. For those of you who would like the link to this podcast in mp3 format, right click the link below and choose "save target as:"Download this episode (right click and save) <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/WiccaEveryday?a=1jtBi
