    Uniquely amusing!

AOMS is a rare gem among the dreck out there. Not only that, but it's also one of the very few podcasts which not only encourages listener participation but relies almost exclusively on it. Trust me on this one. I'm right now holding up my hands to make the sign of The Placid Albino Platypus of Honesty. So you *know* I'm not lying. You will not regret giving this show a try.

Writing Superstitions
10/29/2009 | Download File (0.00 MB) - right click to download
Wikipedia has an interesting rundown on the etymology of "superstition":The etymology is from the classical Latin superstitio, literally "a standing over", hence: "amazement, wonder, dread, especially of the divine or supernatural". The word is attested in the 1st century BC, notably in Cicero, Livy, Ovid, in the meaning of an unreasonable or excessive belief in fear or magic, especially foreign or fantastical ideas. By the 1st century AD, it came to refer to "religious awe, sanctity; a religious rite" more generally.I love Heather's definition - that ritual is based in love, and superstition in fear. And to that (neurotic) end, I do have a few superstitions about writing. I don't really get into the details of the plot of any story I'm working on with anyone until I'm well into it. Or, many times, with myself (hee). I'm guessing superstitions are as different as writers. I'll admit to being superstitious about the query process as well - that is, I'll say a little prayer over an envelope before I send it, I'll consider the day and whether or not it might be auspicious, and most of all, I don't tell anyone I know anymore about when I query and what the results are.So, what are your superstitions when it comes to writing and creating? Please, have some Stevie Wonder, live on Sesame Street. You're welcome.

Special podcast: THE PILGRIM GLASS on KFJC.As I mentioned in my last post, I read an excerpt of THE PILGRIM GLASS on KFJC this morning - and I got the news that it advanced to the ABNA semifinals, on-air! It's a rather long file - about 30 minutes - and I sound like a total dork :)Ann asked me to bring in a CD with a music bed, so I thought I'd share that info with you here. They're all Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd from After Night Falls.1. How Distant Your Heart2. Avenue of Shapes3. She Is My Strength4. Open Book5. And Then I Turned Away6. The Girl With Colorful ThoughtsLast, I must emphasize that the broadcast and this recording are copyright KFJC.

Prefab Sprout
3/15/2009 | Download File (0.00 MB) - right click to download
I'm a sucker for fantastic lyrics in my music, and Paddy McAloon and Prefab Sprout feed that brilliantly, particularly (for me) their later albums. I'm very, very fond of Jordan: The Comeback, not least because my husband and I listened to it pretty much incessantly (along with Cocteau Twins' Heaven Or Las Vegas) when we first started dating. The reason I love Jordan, though, is that it's a type of concept album, and the themes of mercy, searching, forgiveness, and redemption are strong. The melodies are gorgeous and Paddy's storytelling is outstanding. Check them out, please, if you haven't before. Here's a number of Prefab Sprout videos (about seven pages' worth).
