Here, toward the end of chapter 10, Jesus reveals what may be the most difficult thing of all in following Him; division within one’s own family. The cost of loyalty to Jesus may in fact require some to choose between God and their family.

Fear is one of the most powerful emotions that we as humans express. It has almost a paralyzing effect on people. No matter how much a person may desire something or someone fear can make even the most powerful of men and women retreat. Jesus is aware of this. So after commissioning his disciples and sending them out to preach and proclaim the gospel Jesus counsels them on fear.

As Jesus prepares to send his disciples out to the nearby towns and villages to proclaim the good news of His coming He does not promise them a warm and exciteful welcome, rather He forthrightly reveals to them that people will treat them harshly and those they trust the most, even their family, will be some of their harshest critics.

We celebrate motherhood not just because mother’s are the bearer’s and giver’s of life, but because of the sacrifices that mother’s make. We also celebrate Christian motherhood. Because nothing is more precious than to pass along to one’s children an example of faith in Jesus Christ.

Peter Ustinov said, “Charity is more common than compassion. Charity is tax-deductible. Compassion is time consuming.” Celebrities often get caught up in their own cult of celebrity. They get swept away by the attention and acclamation and soon they too become enamored with their self. Jesus, however, becomes more focused on the people and the specific needs and condition of the people.
