I feel like this might be the best photo I've ever taken. It doesn't hurt that the subject (my nephew Cam) is super cute. My favorite thing about Cam right now is that instead of "octopus," he says "apple-pus" for reasons noone knows. And also that, when we played miniature golf last week, every time his ball went in the hole, he would raise up both arms and bellow , "In the hole!" Plus, he would snuggle with me on the couch in the mornings while I drank coffee and he watched "Rescue Heroes."

I swear to God, some day I will post something here besides photos of babies, but come on. Mary's baby is super cute.

We had our annual family picnic Saturday and I got to see some far-flung cousins (and their families) for the first time in too long. This is my cousin's baby girl, Morgan. For a funny sequence, go here and watch the slideshow. We tried to get one picture of my grandma and all her great-grandchildren, but as you can imagine, with all those kids, it didn't go so well. My favorite part is when my nephew Cam (in the green trunks) made a break for the pool and you can see my sister-in-law sprint after him and when he shows back up in the pictures, he is NOT happy about it.

If all goes according to plan, Charlie will be released from the hospital this week. He'll have to stay near the hospital (they've rented a place) but it sounds like he is doing really well. Yay!

Jim and I went to visit Mary and Terry and Jason today and I took some photos. This was the best one. So very cute, that baby.

A Heart for Charlie

This is Charlie. He is my step-uncle's daughter's kid. That makes it sound like he's not really family, but I do consider him family. Anyway, Charlie has a genetic syndrome that has kept him in and out of the hospital since he was very small, largely because his heart didn't work very well. He had a pacemaker for a while, but it was just a matter of time until he needed a transplant. About two weeks ago, Charlie was coughing and having trouble breathing, so the doctors decided it was time to put him on the transplant list, not knowing how long it would be until a matching donor was found. Well, today a donor was found, and Charlie underwent a lengthy transplant surgery. The last update I heard was that the heart was in and things looked good, but Charlie still has a lot of recovery time ahead of him, which is difficult for anyone, but especially for a five-year-old, who misses his dad (who can't stay at the Boston hospital forever because he has to work sometimes at his small business in Central New York) and his twin brother (who also can't stay at the hospital forever because, well, he's five). Why am I telling you this? Because if you have a moment to spare to send some prayers, or good thoughts, or positive energy, or whatever you think might help to Charlie and his family, it would really be appreciated. Charlie is a fantastic kid, outgoing with a great sense of humor, especially considering all he's been through so far in his short life, and he really deserves a break. I'll post updates as warranted.

Jason was born Friday and he weighed 8 lbs 3 1/2 oz (apparently the 1/2 is very important). Mom, Dad, and baby are all doing fine. If you know Mary in person or through the weblog, feel free to leave a comment as I'm sure she will see it eventually!

It's kind of nice knowing what my husband will look like in forty-odd years. This is Jim and his dad, and they are the same person. It's sort of like time-lapse photography in a way. And no, I don't know what Jim's dad was doing with his hands, but it may just be an invisible cat.

Remember Pamie's wildly successful book drive? Remember TWoP's wildly successful donation program? Well now, just like chocolate and peanut butter, those two great tastes have been combined. Many library collections were destroyed by the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Like not slightly damaged. Completely wiped out. No books. No videos. Nothing. So the Dewey Donation System has been set up to help restore those libraries first, and then go on to do even bigger and better book-y things. Click on the image below to go check it out and make a donation!
