Today was part of the 1990's New Jack Swing movement. The group formed in 1988 by Frederick Lee "Bubba" Drakeford, Larry Singletary, Wesley Adams, and Larry McCain, childhood friends from Engelwood, New Jersey. They met Teddy Riley at an anti-drug benefit and it took off from there. He introduced them to Jheryl Busby (RIP), who was on his way out at MCA and brought them to Motown. Today was promoted at the new Four Tops. Why You Gettin' Funky On Me was released in 1991 and was featured in the movie House Party. It reached #2 on the R&B charts.
