These 5 tracks are the results of a remix contest for the Retina.it track, "Pick", off of last year's Semeion album plus an exclusive track, Drumular Inedit by Retina.it. Winners include Apes On Tapes, Tobler, Tommaso Azara, Pocosapiens, and Sodastar. This competition was hosted by Musicaoltranza.net, Retina.it, and Hefty Records. All tracks were mastered at the Kitchen Studios in Bologna, Italy.
To some, the number 9 represents the 8 steps around the cycle of life, plus the motionless center. At the center of our ninth podcast is electronic producer Eliot Lipp, creator of the new ‘Steele Street Scraps’ EP. With this 34 minute mix, exclusive to this podcast, Eliot Lipp explores the cycle of his career. The podcast covers tracks from his releases on Hefty Records, from ‘Tacoma Mockingbird’ to “The Days EP’ to the brand new ‘Steele Street Scraps’ EP. Woven throughout the mix are samples of old school instrumental beats that have inspired Eliot’s musical direction and even exclusive unreleased cuts, including “Savannah” featuring Chicago MC Vyle and an untitled house track. A little Marvin Gaye and Bizzy B on top too. Take the 8 steps through this podcast and you’ll be anything but motionless.
This podcast clocks in at over 30 minutes and features five Retina.IT tracks from "the vault". The selections are taken from early releases on their own Mousikelab label, unreleased material from past sessions and one track from an mp3 compilation they contributed to on Afe Records. This collection of rarities highlights the early development of Retina.IT’s unique style of avant-electronic experimental noise and beats.
This Hefty podcast features a selection of remixes by Slicker (John Hughes) released on various labels from 2001 to 2006. The mix begins with a recently released mix of “NGO/Bitmix” that Hughes completed for esteemed musician Ryuichi Sakamoto. This version appears on ‘Bricolages’ (KAB) with the original appearing on 2005’s “Chasm” (KAB). The chance to remix Sakamoto work was a “thorough honor” says Hughes who has name-checked Sakamoto as an early influence. Following this is a mix of “Lenticchie” for Resina, a side project of Pompeii, Italy duo, Retina.IT (Hefty) and Marco Messina of 99 Posse. Hughes titled his version, “Skunk Mix”, in remembrance of “working in the putrid fog of a skunk” that had visited his studio window well the evening he finished his work. “Lenticchie” was released as part of Mousikelab’s ‘Condominium’ compilation in 2005. Also featured on the podcast is a remix Hughes completed for the German electronic group, Rechenzentrum (Shitkatapult, Kitty-Yo) that was to be featured on a remix album that never materialized. This remix completed in 2001 (around the time of Slicker’s ‘The Latest’) has never been released. Next up is Slicker’s reworking of STS9’s “By The Morning Sun” that was released in 2005 on ‘Artifact: Perspectives’ (1320 Records) which later lead to both artists working together along with Retina.IT on “Mackinaw Peeper Division”, a track for Hefty’s ‘History Is Bunk’ compilation series. Concluding the podcast is “Revisit Red”, an alternate mix of one of Slicker’s own tracks (“Red” 2001) that was released on Shitkatapult’s compilation series ‘Cozmick Suckers (Volume Black & White)’. Shitkatapult is the label of Marco Haas, also known as Mute/Shitkatapult/Hefty artist, T.Raumschmiere.
There will be another installment of the Slicker Remixes podcast in the coming months. Currently, Hughes is completing work on his new electronic music recording studio in Chicago called HFT and is working on various tracks and sketches for an upcoming release. He recently released a digital/12” EP as part of the Immediate Action series on Hefty under his own name and has a remix on the soon to be released Eliot Lipp ‘Steele Street Scraps’ EP on Hefty.
